A More Shapely Home for Pistons
For decades, engine builders have tried to give an engine’s pistons perfect cylinders in which to move up and down. But it turns out that making those cylinders slightly wider at the bottom can improve fuel efficiency.
Gehring Technologies GmbH enables this ultra-precise forming with what it calls form honing machines. CEO Sebastian Schoening says the technique will help ensure that piston engines continue to play a key role in mobility for years to come.
