Carmakers are helping to lead the move to Industry 4.0, an era in which “big-data” analysis integrates individual manufacturing hardware into a vastly more efficient production system, says Kevin Kerrigan, the Michigan Economic Development Corp.’s senior vice president, Automotive.

Earlier phases in industrial development were mechanization, mass production and automation.

Kerrigan says Industry 4.0, which adds cloud computing and artificial intelligence, represents a way to bring more jobs back to America. “Smart factories and smart equipment,” he says, “are the way of the future.”
