Diesel Cold Start System for SsangYong

Borg-Warner Automotive Inc. (borgwarner.com) is supplying SsangYong Motors with an advanced diesel cold-start system for two new diesels from the South Korean OEM, a 1.6- and a forthcoming 2.2-liter, engines that are used in products like the Tivoli and Korando SUVs.

The system includes ceramic glow plugs that provide a heat up time of less than two seconds and a maximum glow temperature of 1,250°F. The glow plug is made with an electrically conductive solid ceramic; its surface has a higher specific resistance than the material of the conductors for supply and return. Unlike other types that have a heating element inside the glow pin that must heat up completely, this one glows only at the tip and surface.

To assure appropriate heating, there is also a glow plug control module that provides the optimum effective voltage for the specific operating parameters.

A word about SsangYong, which is certainly not as familiar in the U.S. as are its competitors, such as Hyundai and Kia.

Turns out that this past September, the SsangYong Changwon Engine Plant II, which went into production in September 2004, produced its millionth cumulative diesel engine.

There is also Changwon Engine Plant I that, with II, produce five different gasoline engines and six different diesels. Plant I went into production in 1994. As of September 2016 the output of the two are a total of 2,460,000 engines.
