The Volkswagen engine plant in Salzgitter, Germany, is thought to be one of the largest in the world. Each day some 7,000 gasoline and diesel engines are produced there, in addition to engine components for a variety of uses. They’re building three-cylinder engines for small cars. They’re building 16-cylinder engines, as well. They’re providing engines for everything from the VW Polo to the Bugatti Veyron.

Why, you might wonder, this industrial tourism. Well, it is because of the reassignment of Salzgitter plant manager Dr. Rudolf Krebs. Krebs started his career at Volkswagen Group in 1996 as head of Gasoline Engine Predevelopment. In 2002 he took on the same position at Audi in Ingolstadt, and was also charged with in-line gasoline engine development. He went back to Wolfsburg in 2005 as head of Powertrain Development for the Volkswagen brand. Then it was to Salzgitter in 2007. In 2009 he also gained responsibility for the Volkswagen brand engine division.

So, do you see a common thread here: engines, internal combustion engines.


Today Dr. Krebs was named to a new assignment that he will undertake in September: Group Chief Officer for Electric Traction. He will report directly to the chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft.

A man with extensive experience in gasoline and diesel engines heading up Electric Traction.

Another sign of the change in the industry toward away from the internal combustion monoculture.
