Today is a notable day in Kragujevac, Serbia, because the Fiat factory there produced its 500,000th Fiat 500L, a Sicilia Orange car with a glossy black roof, powered by a 1.6-liter MultiJet engine.

In the U.S. the Fiat 500L, the bigger version of the diminutive 500, is not doing particularly well, as its sales for all of 2017 were, according to Autodata, just 1,664 units, down 46.6 percent compared with all of 2016.

However, the car, which was launched in 2012 and refreshed in 2017, is doing fairly well in Europe—in Italy and Spain, in particular—with January European sales up 5 percent compared to January 2017. (Its January U.S. sales were down 1.9 percent, with just 104 cars delivered.) As regards the segment that it competes in Europe, with other vehicles like the Mini Countryman and Vauxhall Crossland X, it does really well, with about 22 percent of the whole market and 52 percent in Italy, which is not entirely surprising. (It should be noted that the Mini Countryman had deliveries of 1,485 units in the U.S. in January 2018, which is just 179 shy of the deliveries of all 500Ls in the U.S. in 2017.)

The Serbian plant had undergone a billion-Euro investment and three years of work to prepare it for the launch of the 500L in April 2012. According to FCA, the Kragujevac plant is one of its most advanced manufacturing facilities in the world.
