Now that the political season is in full swing, it is hard to tell whether the auto industry or jobs is getting the greatest amount of hot air.
So this is rather interesting, as it combines auto and jobs. (And possibly a little hot air.)
What’s more, it is something that is probably unexpected:
GM is hiring. Hiring information technology (IT) specialists. And it is hiring these IT professionals not in Detroit, but in Austin, Texas, where it has established the first of what it promises will be several “Innovation Centers.”
“We anticipate hiring as many as 500 new GM employees in Austin,” said Randy Mott, GM chief information officer.
Explaining the rationale behind the Innovation Center and why Austin, he said, “We look to the Innovation Centers to design and deliver IT that drives down the cost of ongoing operations while continuously increasing the level and speed at which innovative products and services are available to GM customers.
“The next generation of IT worker, the talent visionaries we want contributing at the Innovation Center, are being trained at top computer science schools in Texas and surrounding states.
“The IT Innovation Centers are critical to our overall IT business strategy and transformation.”
While GM had outsourced a considerable amount of its IT work, Mott said, “We plan to rebalance the employment model over the next three years so that the majority of our IT work is done by GM employees on extending new capabilities that further enable our business.”
