GM Powertrain: The Future Is Now (or in 2013)
Before becoming vice chairman of GM Global Product Operations, Tom Stephens was executive vice president of GM Global Powertrain and Global Quality. It would be hard to find a nicer guy or a guy who has more admiration for the Small Block engine in this industry.
So I was approximately gobsmacked to see this attributed to Stephens: “Electric motors are the engines of the future.”
If you are looking for any evidence that GM is a different company, there it is.
Stephens was announcing the investment of $246-million in electric propulsion manufacturing. High-volume motor manufacturing is to launch at the GM Baltimore Transmission Plant in 2013.
Batteries are one thing. Electric motors are something else entirely.
If you are looking for any evidence that this is the 21st century, look no further than GM in Baltimore.
Companies—including GM—have spent approximately the last 100 years optimizing the production of the internal combustion engine. Now we’re going to see a transition to things like electric motors.
Yes, the future is now.
