GMC Going Off-Road with AT4

Although the 2019 GMC Sierra has yet to be released, the folks at what is arguably General Motors most-powerful brand (yes, Chevy handily outsells it, but when you look at the total sales numbers for 2017, GMC, which is second in terms of units delivered, is the only one of the GM U.S. brands—also including Buick and Cadillac—that finished the year up over its performance in 2016: a plus sign in front of its performance, not a minus), the brand that has created a massively popular and prosperous Denali sub-brand, are at it again, launching what will probably give some folks over in Auburn Hills a slight case of the nerves: GMC has announced the 2019 GMC Sierra AT4, which is an off-road intensive version of the light-duty pickup.

GMC has announced the 2019 GMC Sierra AT4, which is an off-road intensive version of the light-duty pickup.

The vehicle comes standard with 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, locking rear diff, and skid plate. There is a two-inch factory installed suspension lift kit which results in 10.8-inch ground clearance for the truck. There are off-road tuned Rancho shocks, and while 18-inch wheels are standard, 20s are available. The Sierra AT4 will come with hill-descent control as well as a traction select system that, once the driver makes a selection based on terrain or ambient conditions, adjusts the transmission shift points, throttle mapping, and the electronic stability assist system (StabiliTrak).

The standard engine is a 5.3-liter V8, although they’re also going to be offering a 6.2-liter V8 and a Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel (both of which are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission).

The exterior color scheme which tends toward the dark (e.g., the grille is finished in black chrome, as are the fog lamp bezels and the fender trim; the window trim, mirror caps and skid plate are finished in a high-gloss black), is offset by something that ought to set the aforementioned folks in Auburn Hills reeling: there are red recovery hooks up front.

According to Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC, the Sierra AT4 is prelude to things to come: “It’s. . .the beginning for the AT4 brand, which will be seen on every vehicle in our lineup in the next two years.”

Seems like GMC is going to get serious about going off the beaten path (as well as cruising in comfort via the Denali accoutrements.)
