Auto interiors giant Johnson Controls Inc. is focused on vehicle interior trends in three areas, says Han Hendriks, vice president of sales and innovation.

One is the broad range of design challenges for the interiors of small cars in big cities. For emerging markets, the need is for low-cost designs. But in mature markets such as Europe, buyers want luxury interiors in small cars.

Hendriks says the coming era of self-driving cars opens up the most intriguing options of all.
