A radical change in the interiors of vehicles is coming as autonomous driving technologies free “drivers” to do other things, says Randy Miller, EY’s global automotive and transportation industry leader.

Future cars will meld vehicle interiors with living rooms to enable occupants to shop, make appointments and surf the internet as they travel, explains Peter Fuss, EY senior automotive advisory partner.

One example of this new approach is the Oasis concept unveiled in March at the Geneva auto show by Swiss vehicle innovator Rinspeed AG with support from EY. Fuss says the key to success for carmakers will lie in understanding where customers perceive real value in tomorrow’s self-driving vehicles.
