Mazda5: The Next Generation

Although the next-generation Mazda5 that will be exhibited for the first time anywhere at the 2010 80e Salon International de l’Auto—a.k.a., the Geneva International Motor Show—is being touted for being more environmentally friendly thanks to its 2.0-liter direct-injection engine and its “i-stop” idling stop system (it is said to generate 15% less CO2 than the present-generation model), from our perspective, it is the Nagare design language that makes this vehicle remarkable.

Just check the flow of the metal along those body panels. Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North America, told me in an interview earlier this month at the North American International Auto Show—a.k.a., the Detroit Show—that Mazda5 sales were brisk, with difficulty keeping them on dealer lots (for 2009, the sales were off just 16%, the best percentage of any of the Mazda vehicles with the exception of the Mazda3, which launched a new model in 2009, and its sales were off 12.3%).

When the new Mazda5 gets here, presumably sales will soar.
