According to Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for the Chevrolet Camaro, “We have a lot of engineers who come to our company because they want to work on the Corvette and the Camaro.”
Speaking of the development of the Gen 6 Camaro, which is the current version, “My Camaro team worked very closely with the GT4 Camaro team.” Meaning that there was a whole lot of racing technology thought of even for Camaros that will go no faster than a few miles per hour above the speed limit on a freeway.
But there are those for whom going fast is what their driving is all about, so Oppenheiser and his team have developed the Camaro Turbo 1LE, which features a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque that’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission (no automatic is available).
There is an FE3 suspension that’s configured with larger diameter front and rear stabilizer bars, dampers tuned for the setup, stiffer rear cradle bushings, and cross-axis ball joints in the rear tow links (after all, lateral stiffness matters when you’re putting it into a tight turn).
Not only has the Camaro team worked to eliminate any extraneous mass but for the Turbo 1LE, they’ve managed to get a nearly 50/50 weight balance.
Inside there is a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob to facilitate grip. Recaro seats are available. In the cluster, there are performance instrument readouts, launch control, shift lights, and other information to help one achieve the sort of lap times being sought.
Oppenheiser said that when they started working on the Gen 6 car they “focused on mass and performance.”
Evidently, they continue to.
