Nissan Gets More Sirius

While there have been some who have questioned whether infotainment provider SiriusXM can have longevity in the face of various Internet radio offerings, this week a rather clever play was made by SiriusXM and Nissan North America: SiriusXM is going to become the supplier of telematics services for Nissan brand vehicles in the U.S.

While there have been some who have questioned whether infotainment provider SiriusXM can have longevity in the face of various Internet radio offerings, this week a rather clever play was made by SiriusXM and Nissan North America:

SiriusXM is going to become the supplier of telematics services for Nissan brand vehicles in the U.S.

These services will include 24/7 emergency support for accidents, stolen vehicle tracking, and roadside assistance.

What’s clever about this is the fact that as a number of Nissan customers have the hardware for the satellite radio broadcaster in their vehicles, this is being leveraged through the additional services.

As Trisha Jung, director, Nissan Connected Services, explained, “Being the first car company to launch these telematics services allows us to further enhance the whole customer driving experience by providing the finest audio entertainment and data services that meet the growing expectations of the connected driver. After working with SiriusXM for more than a decade, we are excited about bringing world-class telematics services to our customers.”

And as Mel Karmazin, CEO of SiriusXM observed, “Offering telematics services is a logical next step for SiriusXM, building on our advanced in-vehicle technological capabilities, subscriber management expertise, and proven experience providing national service to drivers.”

One advantage for the customer: a consolidated bill for the audio and the services.
