When you think “carbon neutrality,” you probably don’t imagine something like this, a Porsche 911 GT3 carving the course at the Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles (there is another in Atlanta, also operated by Porsche Cars North America (PCNA)):
It turns out that that car, as well as all of the cars at the LA and Atlanta Experience Centers, as well as the vehicles in the Porsche Passport monthly subscription service, a total of 425 vehicles, are carbon neutral.
PCNA is working with South Pole, a Swiss organization that develops programs to help companies and organizations of all types to reduce their carbon footprint.
Porsche Digital has developed “Porsche Impact,” which allows vehicle owners to (1) determine the emissions from their vehicles and then (2) find out what financial contribution will be necessary to offset those emissions.
Those 425 vehicles previously mentioned are registered in Porsche Impact.
This program will be made to available U.S. Porsche customers later this year.
As an example of what would be involved, PCNA says that driving a 2019 Cayenne S for 10,000 per year would require an offset contribution ranging from $67 to $152 per year, depending on the project selected for support, which include forest protection in the U.S., hydropower in Vietnam, solar energy in Mexico, and species diversity in Zimbabwe.
Given that a Cayenne S starts at $82,900, that is a small price to pay, comparatively speaking.
