The Return of Spyker
A couple years ago I was at a press event when Victor Muller, then chairman and CEO of Saab Automobiles, was holding forth about things to come for the company as regards innovative design. The company had hired Jason Catriota, who did the Saab PhoeniX concept, and had things not gone financially cataclysmic for the once-Swedish company, perhaps there would have been some amazing things designed by Catriota for Saab.
Victor Muller, as you may recall, was the head of Spyker Cars, a Dutch specialty sports car producer. The number of cars that Spyker had built up till the time it acquired Saab from GM in 2010 would have probably fit comfortably in Jay Leno’s garage.
Given various and sundry financial issues of a global nature, Spyker pretty much dropped from view.
But it came back in Geneva with the Spyker B6 Venator concept, a compact, two-door, mid-engined sports car designed by. . .Victor Muller.
The car is 171 inches long and has a 98-inch wheelbase. It is 74 inches wide. It weighs less than 3,080 pounds, which is a result of the carbon-fiber body on an all-aluminum platform. There are 19-inch Turbofan wheels.
It has a traverse-mounted V6 rated at +375 hp; it uses a six-speed automatic transmission.
The interior styling is redolent of air aircraft from back in the day. The LED taillamps are said to resemble “the iris-type after burners of a jet engine from a modern fighter aircraft.”
Born from jets?
Said Victor Muller in introducing the B6 Venator, “There is no denying that Spyker went through a very rough period in recent years. However, today we prove the truth of our motto since 1914, Nulla tenaci invia est via—For the tenacious no road is impassible.”
The car is said to cost between $125,000 and $150,000.
It should be interesting to see whether this car takes off.
