ArcelorMittal and Third-Gen Auto Steels
In the past, moving to stronger steels meant accepting greater limits to formability. Now third-gen advanced steels are overcoming those challenges, says ArcelorMittal's Ram Iyer.
In the past, moving to stronger steels meant accepting greater limits to formability.
But an expanding family of third-generation high-strength steels is overcoming those limits, thanks to advanced metallurgy and innovative processing methods, notes Ram Iyer, manager of steel solutions and co-engineering at global steel giant ArcelorMittal.
Carmakers are using these new steels primarily to make structural components, notably a vehicle’s occupant safety cage, lighter. Iyer adds that steelmakers are getting involved earlier in the new product development cycle to help integrate these new steels.
