Toyota Makes Engine Investments
Toyota is investing, to quote Dick Cheney, “big time” in engine production in the U.S. So far this month it has made two announcements about boosting its engine manufacturing.
First up, it was a $30-million project being undertaken at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky—a.k.a., the Georgetown Plant—where it is increasing engine assembly capability for four-cylinder engines by more than 100,000 per year. This will boost the plant’s output to more than 500,000 engines annually. The capacity increase will allow Toyota to ship engines from Kentucky to Ontario for the RAV4, as well as be used in Georgetown for the Camry and Camry Hybrid.
Then last week the company announced that it is going to boost its production of V6 engines at its Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama (TMMAL) plant in Huntsville by an additional 216,000 engines per year. This $80-million investment will require the addition of a 300,000-sq. ft. plant at the site. It will bring the total production of engines at the facility to 362,000 when it goes on line in March 2014.
One interesting fact about the TMMAL plant: it produces four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines and is the only Toyota engine plant anywhere to produce these three types of engines under one roof. (We’re guessing that that V8 is probably the wild card in all this.)
Toyota also has an engine plant in West Virginia. When you add it all together, the company will have the capacity to built some 1.4-million engines annually in the U.S.
