Toyota’s Progressive Approach to Driver Assist
Toyota Motor Corp. is taking a step-by-step approach to advanced driver assist features, says Wayne Powell, vice president of R&D for Toyota Motor North America.
Toyota’s first-generation system, called Toyota Safety Sense, debuted in 2015 and currently is available in virtually all Toyota models. TSS offers automatic braking, lane departure alerts and automatic high-beam control.
The more advanced system will bow in certain 2020 model Lexus models. It adds the ability to detect pedestrians at night, lane departure warning and steering assist, and advanced dynamic cruise control.
Powell says the key is to gain customer acceptance for new features at each step. “If people don’t trust them,” he says, “they won’t use them or get the benefit.”
