Next-generation brake systems combined with driver assist systems that monitor traffic conditions can help drivers stop more effectively and boost brake pressure if necessary for a quicker stop or the brakes can be applied automatically if the driver isn't paying attention to a slowing vehicle ahead, says Manfred Meyer, vice president of Brake Engineering at TRW Automotive.

Such systems are especially important in emergency situations, when drivers have very little time to assess the situation and take the most effective action, he points out.
