We promise that there won’t be another tire shot here for a while, but this one—again from Yokahama (you’d think we’d have something to say about the other guys, but not yet)—is notable inasmuch as (1) Porsche GT3 cars using said tires took fisrt and second place at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill on December 4-5 (the Mercer Motorsports team and the Ehret Winery team, respectively) and (2) the cars were fitted with ADVAN ENV-R1 tires that are infused with orange oil.

Yes, orange oil. As in, well, oranges.

Apparently Yokohama has—and we’re now quoting here from their official information—“developed a process that combines orange oil with natural rubber to form a new compound called ‘Super Nano-Power Rubber.’”

We are not making that up.

It is said to reduce petroleum use in the tire by 10% and increases recyclability, even while providing the chops to win endurance races.

Super Nano-Power Rubber.

Johannes van Overbeek, one of the five Mercer drivers, said, “I’m an avid outdoorsman, so I’m always on the environmental side. I don’t care what’s in a tire, as long as you get the right results. This orange oil tire is durable, consistent and eco-friendly, so you get the best of both worlds.”

No word on whether it has a citrusy smell, however.
