Pirelli Demos 5G-Enabled Tire

Italy’s Pirelli & Co. has tested a tire that uses an embedded 5G-chip to transmit road data back to the vehicle and other road users.

Performance Directly on the Road

Although tire development is part of new vehicle development—after all, the ride and handling of any vehicle is going to be significantly affected by that singular patch on the road surface (OK, there are four such patches, but you know what I mean)—generally an OEM talks about as much about its tire supplier as it does its seat supplier (and the tire supplier at least has the advantage of having its name visible on the product, while the typical seat supplier is effectively transparent). So it comes as a bit of a surprise to see this: Yes, that’s right, Michelin Bib in the company of a Ford Shelby.

Conceptually Cool Rubber

While people attending the 85th Geneva Motor Show are, for obvious reasons, distracted by things like the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman and the McLaren P1 GTR, from a design and engineering perspective there were two other introductions—of concepts—at the show that are conceptually more startling than even the Lexus LF-SA: Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company showed two tires, the BHO3 and the Triple Tube.

BMW EV Tires

Although BMW i3 electric vehicles have been on sale in the U.S. since May 2014, I must confess to never having seen one in the wild.

Nokian: They Know Snow

Although we’re hoping that the MegaWinter of 2013-14 is behind us now (we’ve thought this before, and were smacked back into reality with 0-degree temps and a half-a-foot of snow), it has come to our attention that Nokian Tyres, a tire manufacturer that hails from Finland, so the designers and engineers there undoubtedly know a little more than most about snow and ice, have launched a new tire for SUVs, the WR G3 SUV, which is designed with. . . “Snow Claws.” The Snow Claws are highlighted in green in this picture: According to Nokian, these shapes on the longitudinal and diagonal grooves of the tread blocks provide additional grip.

Airless, Stylish Tire

Pneumatic tires have pretty much looked like, well, pneumatic tires since the late 19th century.

Happy New Year: Michelin Tire, No Baby

Because today is New Year’s Day (Happy New Year! by the way), and because a baby is the symbol of the day, we’d hoped to run a picture of that cute baby ad that Michelin had run, with the baby in the tire and the headline, “Because so much is riding on your tires.” That, of course, would have been day and website appropriate.

Orange Tires Are Still Black, But Also Green

While tires are produced with a variety of materials, there is only one company in the world that produces tires with orange oil.

Wiring The Tires

Siemens VDO Automotive and Goodyear have developed a tire monitoring system that goes beyond government mandates and makes tires an integral part of a vehicle's electronic network. Will it be the technology of choice in the future?

From a Land Down Under

Don't look to see an aXcess australia on the road anytime soon—or otherwise. The Australian supply base along with government agencies do want the world to have a better understanding of the capabilities that can be found in that country, so while you'll never drive one, you can see the sorts of things they have in mind.
