High-Performance Mercedes EQE Electric Due in 2022
Daimler AG plans to begin selling its sixth all-electric model, the coupe-like high-performance Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan, in 2022, Autocar reports.
The EQE is among 10 “EQ” badged electrics planned for introduction by the end of 2025. The car, sized between the conventionally powered Mercedes E-Class and S-Class models, will be a direct competitor to Tesla Inc.’s $75,000 Model S sedan.
Autocar says the EQE will debut with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. A source tells the British enthusiast magazine that a less expensive rear-drive model with one motor may be added later.
The British enthusiast magazine says power and torque for the EQE are likely to surpass the 408 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque delivered by the two-motor EQC small electric crossover. The latter model began production one month ago.
The EQE will be the model second EV to ride on Daimler’s new MEA electric car chassis. Other EQ series models announced to date will use existing Mercedes platforms. The group comprises the GLC-based EQC crossover, A-Class-based EQA compact coupe, V-Class-based EQV minivan and upcoming GLB- based compact EQB crossover.
