Magna Wins Mega BMW Transmission Order
Magna International Inc. says it has received a long-term contract from BMW AG to supply dual-clutch transmissions for 150 of the carmaker’s model variants.
Describing the award as its largest transmission production order ever, Magna says the gearboxes will be used in all future front-wheel-drive BMW Group models.
The program includes vehicles with hybrid-electric powertrains, which will integrate a 48-volt electric motor within the transmission housing.
Magna will manufacture the transmissions at its facilities in Neuenstein, Germany, and Kechnec, Slovakia. It isn’t clear how long the contract will run.
Lithium-ion batteries have become the technology of choice for EVs, and falling costs and rising energy levels could keep them on top for nearly two decades.
