Mini Revs Up Performance Models
BMW AG’s Mini unit says its 2020 model John Cooper Works (JCW) Clubman wagon (pictured) and Countryman crossover variant will be the brand’s most powerful models to date.
Power will come from a revised turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that’s tuned to make 301 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque. Those outputs surpass the current models by 32% and 28%, respectively. Zero-to-62 mph acceleration has been cut by 1.5 seconds to 4.9 seconds for the Clubman and 5.1 seconds for the Countryman. Both cars are electronically limited at 155 mph.
The reworked engine has a tougher crankshaft, new pistons that drop the compression ratio from 10.2:1 to 9.5:1 and a larger turbocharger than the current 2.0-liter mill. At launch, the only transmission available will be an 8-speed automatic. The current 6-speed manual is being dropped.
Mini made suspension and chassis modifications, and it fitted bigger brakes to make sure both cars stop as well as they go. A standard adaptive suspension lets the driver choose from several driving modes ranging from sporty to comfort.
The 2020 JCW models also get an improved suspension, including an optional package with electronically adjustable shocks. A beefier all-wheel-drive system features stronger gears and axles, plus standard launch control. The cooling system also has been enhanced.
Styling changes are minimal. Pricing of the 2020 models will be announced later.
