A new three-story bicycle garage in Utrecht, Netherlands, can accommodate 12,500 bikes, reportedly making it the largest such facility in the world.

The garage sits adjacent to a downtown train station to improve commuter access to public transportation. On average, some 125,000 bicyclists pass through Utrecht per day. About half of the city’s train riders bike to and from a station.

With about 1.3 bikes per person, the Netherlands already is one of the most bicycle-centric countries in the world. Traffic congestion from cars is expected to worsen in coming years, which has prompted calls for increased investment in the city’s infrastructure.
