Self-Driving Bimmers Rate High with Lyft Riders
Lyft Inc. says the autonomous BMW 540i cars it offers ride-hailing customers in Las Vegas have received an average rating of 4.97 out of 5 from riders over the past two years.
The company doesn’t publicize ratings for its human drivers. But Lyft claims the self-driving Bimmers outscored the average Lyft driver in the U.S.
In addition to a rider’s satisfaction, Lyft acknowledges the high scores may be partially attributed to a rider’s excitement about experiencing the advanced technology and the luxury feel and comfort of riding in a 540i.
Lyft operates the Las Vegas BMW fleet with Aptiv plc, which provides the autonomous driving technology. The vehicles have completed more than 75,000 rides to date. A backup driver is onboard at all times.
Elio Motors is something of a brash company.
In-car video shows that the backup pilot of an Uber Technologies self-driving car was not watching the road just before the vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian last Sunday night.
