UAW Workers Ratify GM Contract, Ending Strike
United Auto Workers union hourly workers have ratified a four-year contract with General Motors Co. that ends a 40-day walkout.
Production and skilled trades workers approved the pact by estimated margins of 56% and 66%, respectively, according to Automotive News.
The UAW’s strike hit 55 sites in the U.S., whose shutdown also affected facilities in Canada and Mexico and supplier operations in all three countries. GM lost at least $50 million per day in lost production.
The union says its next negotiating target is Ford Motor Co. The UAW will seek to use the GM pact as a pattern at Ford and then at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ U.S. operations.
GM won the right to shut down its already-idled assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, and powertrain factories in Baltimore, Md., and Warren, Mich. The company agreed to turn its Detroit-Hamtramck plant in Michigan into an electric van and truck facility rather than close it in January.
GM pledged to invest as much as $7.7 billion in the U.S. (including $3 billion in the Detroit-Hamtramck facility), pay its UAW workers record-high $11,000 signing bonuses, boost wages and enable all full-time hourly workers to reach the top pay grade of $32.32 per hour by the end of the contract.
