Uber Technologies Inc. reports 58 fatal crashes, nine murders and more than 3,000 sexual assaults involving its ride-hailing service in the U.S. last year.
Tony West, the company’s chief legal officer, describes the figures as “jarring and hard to digest,” even though the incidents represent 0.0002% of the 1.3 billion rides Uber provided in the U.S. in 2018, The New York Times reports.
West also points out that the figures include passenger attacks on Uber drivers as well as the reverse. The data, he suggests, show “Uber is a reflection of the society it serves.”
The inaugural report does not offer statistics about other countries where Uber operates. But it does create a benchmark for data that safety experts say have been next to nonexistent before now.
The company plans to issue similar safety analyses every two years. Yesterday’s report comes as 19 women filed a lawsuit against rival Lyft Inc., asserting they had been sexually assaulted by Lyft drivers.
